my laptop screen is no longer working. can the adapter duplicate the screen once i plug it into the usb drive or do i need to install a software first?

The item is plug and play. If you are looking for something that will handle hd and streaming video I'm not sure that this is it. I use if for basic image conversion such as powerpoint.

Question 2

connecting this to my laptop will I get three displays? my laptop has one HDMI and one VGA port.
So, connecting the HDMI port to one monitor and connecting the other VGA to the IOGEAR GUC2015V USB will it get two more? 
Doing this will I be able to work with three monitor at the same time?

It largely depends on your laptop and what video card it has. However, most laptops can drive 2 monitors. The laptops internal LCD and an external, adding the IO Gear would give you a third. Many newer laptops can drive 3 displays, the internal LCD and 2 outputs, if that's the case with yours then the IO gear would give you one more. The IO Gear is actually a separate video card, not just a way to attach another monitor to your existing video card. That said you could plug several of these in and get many displays going.

Question 3

will this work with windows 8.1?  I purchased two of these in 2008 and I wonder whether they will work with my new laptop which is a lenovo yoga 2.

Will this work on an LG 22" LED DVI-D or D-SUB attachment for the monitor?

It is a USB to VGA connector and wont work on a DVI-D unless you have a DVI-D to VGA adapter (not included) in-between the DVI-D and USB to VGA adapter.  Concerning a D-Sub attachment, I am not sure of what you are defining, it must be able to attach to a DE-15 adapter used for VGA, SVGA and XGA adapters.

Will this work with Windows Server 2008?

Can I use two of these to extend my display to three total dispalys? For example:

USB monitor(extended screen)-Main Display-USB monitor(extended screen)

Haven't tried to use two of these on the same system but I don't see why that wouldn't work
