I need to extend a USB port to a remote, powered 7 port hub in my observatory. Main and guide camera will be always on as will ASCOM connection to the mount and focuser, occasionally Polemaster and finder camera will be used but not as the same time as the main camera. Thoughts?

Definitely get something quality like an ICRON extender. That's what all the pros use. This one has worked well for field use, but the cable is only 35ft long. I've also had some weird USB issues with the Sky X and think it's related to this.

does this device support bidirectional communication?

Mine quit after only a short time. I would not purchase again.

If I connect the 30 pin to usb from ipad 2 will it connect the ipad to the internet through ethernet cord?

No. This device does not touch the internet. It simply sends usb signal over what happens to also be used as a network cable so it the signal can go farther. The setup you describe would not do anything.

does this work if i plug a usb 3.0 hub to be extended?

it will work, but only at usb2.0 speeds, the GUCE64 will be a bottle neck, but the USB protocol is backwards compatible and will work

The IOGEAR USB 2.0 4-Port BoostLinq Ethernet combines a USB extender and a USB hub to allow connecting as many as four USB 2.0 (and/or USB 1.1 ) devices from up to 164 feet away from your computer. Connected devices still maintain a high-speed data transfer rate of up to 480Mbps, while operating from a more convenient location. The USB 2.0 4-Port BoostLinq Ethernet converts a USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 connection to RJ-45, and sends the USB data over common Cat5, Cat5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cable up to a distance of 164 feet (50 meters).

The USB 2.0 4-Port BoostLinq Ethernet is considered an active repeater, using a small power supply to amplify the USB signal and preserve the integrity of the data over long distances.
