The cable is about under 4" inches long and when not in use it will plug in to the empty USB port on the end.  It fits ideally in a laptop bag while taking up almost no room at all.  So far I have had no problems with this little hub.  I have a second one now for my wife's laptop bag.  I hope this helps.
