I am looking to use this to replace a USB-based hard-drive cradle.  Of critical importance to me is that I am able to swap multiple drives in and out, and have them recognized in Windows 8.1 x64 without having to reboot.  Is this a realistic expectation of this unit?

I installed three of these drives into a Windows 2008 R2 server. I've had nothing but issues trying to swap the drives. They have to be placed into the device just right. Then after closing the door slightly, you have to push the drive side closest to the hinge harder to make sure there's a good connection. Also the server locks up and has to be rebooted after every swap.

I finally just put a drive in there permanently and use USB external drives with a product called Beyond Compare to copy the info to the external drive. That software carries the permissions and only copies files that change. It will also delete files not on the base drive if setup as "mirror" instead of "copy" which works great.

I have no plans to purchase this type drive again for business or personal use and I don't recommend it to anyone else either. Even if the OS didn't have issues with reading the drive, just trying to load the drive properly is enough of an issue to keep me from purchasing it again and I don't recommend it for purchase if you want to swap drives with any regularity. The only reason to purchase it is if you plan on leaving the drive in there for extended periods of time. Once it's placed properly it works as a drive should.
