The iStarUSA BPN-DE350SS-RED is a trayless hot-swap cage that converts three 5.25-inch bays into five 3.5-inch SAS or SATA drive bays, with support for data rates up to 6.0 Gb/s. It suits server and workstation builders who need expandable, front-accessible storage; RAID requires a separate controller.
Recommended For
- Home-server and NAS builders who have three adjacent 5.25-inch bays and want to consolidate five 3.5-inch drives in one removable, front-accessible cage.
- Workstation or storage-array operators who need front-accessible 3.5-inch drives so they can replace or move a drive without removing the cage; hot-swap operation still depends on compatible host hardware and configuration.
- Desktop storage builders repurposing unused optical-drive bays who want a trayless way to add several 3.5-inch SAS or SATA drives to a compatible tower case.
- Users who want a metal-bodied drive cage with adjustable fan speed and are willing to balance cooling against fan noise in a multi-drive system.
Real-World Use Scenarios
- When a server or workstation has three unused 5.25-inch bays, installing the cage puts five 3.5-inch drives within reach at the front, making routine drive access easier than reaching drives mounted inside the case.
- In a storage server with hot-swap support configured, an administrator can replace an accessible drive without removing the whole drive cage; the host controller and operating system must also support the intended hot-swap workflow.
- When expanding a home server or NAS built in a tower with suitable front bays, the cage provides a compact way to bring several hard drives together for shared storage; RAID operation depends on a separate compatible controller.
- For a home media or file server that needs several internal hard drives, the cage can make adding or changing drives less cumbersome; it is most useful when the computer already has three compatible 5.25-inch bays and the owner expects to access drives periodically.
- Before fitting the cage into an older tower, check the case's bay rails and drive-bay clearance; some cases may need adjustment, and the built-in fan may be noticeable in a quiet room.
