Does the sata hot swappable bay have a sata connector to connect to the motherboard or do you need to connect the drive dirrectly to the mohterboard?

For the ODD you need a slim to normal adapter. For the SDD/HDD bay, connectors are on the enclosure. So you can connect with a normal SATA cable between the enclosure and the motherboard. This makes the SDD/HDD hot swappable without the need of detaching cables.

The iStarUSA T-5K25TU-SA is a 5.25-inch drive-bay cage that combines one trayless, key-locking 2.5-inch SATA hot-swap bay, support for a slim optical drive, and two front USB 3.0 ports. It suits desktop or server builders with a compatible 5.25-inch bay who want convenient drive access and front connectivity.

Recommended For

Desktop builders with an available external 5.25-inch bay who want to add one front-accessible, trayless 2.5-inch SATA drive for swapping or servicing drives without opening the case.
Users restoring or extending a desktop with a 5.25-inch bay who want a slim optical drive, a 2.5-inch SATA drive, and two front USB 3.0 ports in the same bay.
PC maintainers who regularly move or replace a single 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD and want a key-locking, front-accessible bay; the review found the drive and USB connections pass through to the system’s native interfaces.
Builders adding front USB 3.0 ports to a compatible older desktop case who can connect the unit’s internal USB header and have a free 5.25-inch bay.

Real-World Use Scenarios

In a desktop or server with an unused 5.25-inch bay, install a slim optical drive and a removable 2.5-inch SATA drive in the same space, keeping disc access while adding a convenient drive-swap point.
When testing different operating systems or drive configurations, swap compatible 2.5-inch SATA drives from the front instead of repeatedly opening the case; one B&H reviewer reports using the bay to boot from different drives.
For a system that needs occasional drive replacement or servicing, use the front trayless bay to remove or install a supported 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD without removing the cage from the case; hot-swap operation depends on compatible system hardware and configuration.
On a workstation with limited front-panel connections, use the two front USB ports for easier access to USB peripherals, provided the case’s internal USB header is connected during installation.
