The rear is 2 units deep , where it attaches. If you have a rack, you can measure it. My rough measurement is around 3 inches. But remember, this is just for mounting the shelf. If you reverse it, it can lie flat with the raised sides below. You only loose the space between the rack and the tabs that attach to the rack, around 3/4 inches
