wrt the the 4 display monitors: could they display separate or different applications simulataneously ?
eg. monitor 1 displays excel file
       monitor 2 displays word file
       monitor 3 displays web page (under Internet explorer)
       monitor 4 displays desktop

I have been pleased with the VGA Display Adapter.  I am only using two monitors but yes I can display any combination of applications simultaneously. My experience with USB to VGA adapters is that the monitor using the adapter lags slightly so I tend to have most of the applications that I am working with on the normal VGA display but any support applications (ie log files, pandora, etc.) I leave on the monitor connected via the adapter.

when I hook up the display adapter the pointer freezes, how do I fix that?

I am using my 3rd one of these adapters.  I seldom turn off my computer.  I'm hoping this one will last a bit longer
It is very easy to install and had good resolution if you are not using it for a game computer.  Excellent for business.  I have 3 screens on my system.  I would not like to go back to 2 screens. 
I have not had any other problems with mine. (other than the first two went belly up.)

Question 4

I use this to extend my desktop from my laptop to 3 monitors. The laptop with the dock can handle the first two, so they show up in the display settings, and I am able to arrange them as I please. This one, however, does not show up in the settings and I cannot change the placement. This wasn't a problem at first, but I connected my computer a few days ago, and now this monitor is on the wrong side of the screen.

Do you know how to control these monitors' positions whilst they are connected to this device?

Its not showing up in the display settings?  I would unplug the usb device and move it to another USB hole. Let it redetect and check in the display settings.  I have used about 20 of these and I have 1 that is pretty finicky and the only fix is to do what I just told you.    There is a spot in display settings to detect monitors, that works once in a while but not often!..  Hope this helps a little.

I think so, but I'm not sure 'cuz I never tried.  I know the software gives the option to install for macs.

This converts USB to standard VGA output. Yes, it should work.

Not sure, I know I installed the drivers for the adapter, connected the vga cable to the adapter, and the usb computer and I had a working second screen.  Glad I got it.

so I just downloaded windows 8.1  now my second screen will not connect.  what do I do?

Buy a better adapter or go back to the better OS XP. I have this adapter and I had to replace it with a better one. I've used these types before but I have had nothing but issues with this particualr one.

Question 10

I believe my on board video card built into the motherboard is shot. I have just a black screen. Would this device replace the onboard video card ? I hate just throwing away the computer.
Or can ayone offer any other solutions ?

Not sure if you can boot up using this adapter (if your internal video controller completely dead) but after installing it should work...
However, if you can install internal (add-in) video card it should pick-up at boot.
