is this connection faster than a direct ethernet connection to my computer?

The short answer:  probably not

The long answer:  "fast" in networking can relate to several characteristics, like latency or throughput.  Latency is pretty much defined by the software that's running in your computer and the switch/router it is connected to.  Connecting to the network via a build-in adapter or this USB adapter does not change this very much.  Throughput depends on the type of connection.  The adapter negotiates the connection speed with the switch/router you are connected to.  If this switch/router supports only 100MB/s, the adapter has to use this speed - wether it is capable of 1GB/s or not.  If your build-in adpater supports only 100MB/s, then this is the maximum speed you can use, no matter if the switch/router supports 1GB/s or not.  If you connect to a 1GB/s switch/router, this USB adapter would be faster than a 100MB/s build-in adapter since it supports up to 1GB/s.  However, the system needs to have a USB-3 adapter, and I suspect that most system which provide a USB-3 adapter provide also a 1GB/s network adapter.

Will this work on a tablet like the nexus 7 to allow a wired network connection to be used?

I am using this adapter with my Linux system, and it works without a problem.  Since Android is based on Linux, I would expect it to work with Android - but - I don't know that for a fact.

Anyone know if this works with the Wii U?

This device is not plug and play it comes with a disk for the installation for the drivers.

It is a great product, but you would want to find out if the Wii U has the ability for the consumer to download or install driver software for this device.

No, the adapter shouldn't delete anything on your computer. I needed this adapter because the installed Ethernet Adapter on my laptop had failed. Good product.

I want to conect a usb plug-in router to a Lan input in a Belkins range extender. Will this work for that?

Most likely not.  Routers typically have horrific driver support for USB devices.  I haven't personally tried but just trying a Google search there's not much written on doing it either.
