The image seems to look like it's designed for left handed mouse use. Is that correct?

No, that is not correct. It is designed for the right hand but can be used for the left if you wish, but definitely not as comfortable. Notice that if you put the bottom pad squared on a desk the top part of the pad extends to the right, that is because if you are right handed you will have more space for your mouse to roam to the upper right. If it was designed for left hand use the pad would be a mirror image of the one you see pictured to allow the maximum amount of space for the mouse to move.
