ECC memory is basically used in servers.  It cost more than nonECC memory because it has one extra chip that's used to correct a bad byte.  Physically, you'll find 8 chips for nonECC momory on a stick and 9 chips on a stick of ECC memory.

Short answer is No.

KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G is ECC corrected.  The specs for your MoBo call for nonECC memory.

Physically, it takes 9 chips on the board running in parallel to support a byte as one of the chips is used for ECC correction.  (ECC memory always has an odd number of chips).This was the only chipset Newegg stocked using ECC unbuffered memory.  They had lots of Non ECC emeory, and it, generally, was less expensive and is probably fine for gaming and desktops

I put this in an HP proliant server running  ZFS-1 Raid supporting 10 2TB drives.  The ECC memory is used on the Proliant MoBos for more reliabilty as one would like when running a server storing mission critical data..

Will this work for a Supermicro X8STi system running Windows Small Business Server?

Short Answer:  Yes

Explanation:  ECC memory is called for in critical applications.  Hardware wise, it means one more chip on the memory stick which allows the memory to recover from a missing bit during a transaction.  Because it uses one more chip, it is costlier (and rarer) than non-ECC memory.  non-ECC memory is more popular with gamers and those who eek out the fastest performance as "pushing" that extra error correcting chip takes just a little more power, and runs slightly slower than nonECC memory.

Unbuffered memory is used where data integrity is of utmost importance, such as in a server.  Physically, it has one more chip on the board (9 vs. 8 on a side).  It generally cost more, and is less common (or fewer choices) because most desktop users don't require that level of data security. If you're running a Raid or ZFS then Unbuffered is recommended.
