Is the connection on the back proprietary? Could I use a USB mini or micro?

Hey Chris,

No, the connection on the back is NOT proprietary.  I used a Micro USB cable to connect the card reader to my computer, connecting it to the right side of the connector on the card reader, and was able to use it.  I believe it will only work in USB 2.0 in this mode, but I don't have any USB 3.0 connectors, and would probably use a different cable if I was in a bind and left the original one at home.

I'm very pleased with this card reader, and hope that you end up purchasing it.

Is this card reader compatible with any Windows based operating system?

It is a USB 3.0 device.  It is compatible with all modern versions of windows, such as Win7, Win8, Vista, and XP.  It might be compatible with 98SE, but wouldn't count on it.

What specifically do you mean by "capacity"?  As a support engineer, I must say that more content is needed to analyze & respond appropriately.  I can tell you from experience that my 32GiB microSDHC card was recognized by this device, if that helps any.

Question 4

does this device read Solid State hard drives.  That's what I put into the search but I do not see a reference to SSD's?

This device reads memory systems (as listed with this product) from which one transfers information to a hard drive (SSD) in the computer.  Example: I transfer photo files to my PC by extracting the CF memory card from my camera and inserting the card into this device.  This device then "reads" and transfers those files to the computer's hard drive.  The shopper seems confused about the function of a hard drive, as well as remote memory cards/sticks.

What is the difference between USB2.0 and USB3.0?

Fast answer: Speed. USB 2.0 maxes at 480 Mbps. USB 3.0 maxes at 5 Gbps, more than 10 times faster.

USB 3.0 also uses a slightly newer connector, but the ports are backwards compatible with USB 2.0.

I have been using this for about a year with my Windows 8.1 installation.  I haven't have any issues.  I use it with my USB 3.0 port.

The specs for this reader do not include UDMA7 CF cards, does anyone know whether or not they will work?

when I purchased this I thought it read xd picture card Since most of my cards are like that whatb do I do?

xD Picture Card is an old obsolete extremely uncommon format.

Suggest you either Google search for a reader which actually supports xD Photo or connect your old Fuji / Olympus camera to a computer with a USB cord and transfer images directly.

Are there any reported issues with windows 8.1? I purchased a startech media card reader and only 3 of the 5 slots are accessible in windows 8.1 environment.

No issues on either of my 8.1 setups.  All cards I have tested (SD, MicroSD) work just fine.  Sadly, I don't have other formats to test, but the driver seemed to load all the slots just fine.

How long is the cable that comes with this reader?

Not sure since I replaces OWM cable with a long cable to connect to my workstation 12 feet away. Guessing OEM cable maybe 4-6 feet.
