It should work with windows XP using the standard USB mass storage driver. However it won't be full speed if your system ports are not USB 3.0 as well.
It will only transfer as fast as the USB ports on your computer.

Question 2

How deep/solid is the CF card slot? I bought a cheap reader and the CF card slot pins bent after two uses.

I do not use the CF card slot in my Kingston, just secure digital. I consider the brand very reputable for good products. Regarding your question I would say that the depth probably is standardized and the CF card is mostly outside the slot. Your problem deals with inserting the card, the kind of slot, and what type of CF card you use.
Type I is 43.0 mm(W)  x36.0 mm{L} x 3.3 mm thickness.
Type II is 43.0 mm(W) x 36.0 mm(L) x 5.0 mm thickness. Both have 50 pin holes. 
There are some CF cards not Type I and Type II that have 68 pin holes.
Make sure that the slot will take both types that almost always is the case.
The pins are very delicate and you have to be extremely careful inserting the CF card, straight in and do not apply force. Do not try to put one end first over the other. Kingston has two guides on left and right of the slot to insert the card correctly and make sure that the face up of the card faces you. Cheap Card Readers might not have the guides and this is sure a disaster for the reader but more so for your CF card data. If any of the pin holes in your CF card is dirty or plugged this will bend the pins. With this in mind I do not use CF cards. 
If you like to use a CF card or just your equipment uses it by default, and plan to use it a lot, I would recommend a PCMCIA adapter from a good brand. You insert the CF card into the adapter and you do it first and then the adapter with CF card goes into the reader. The CF card inserts completely into the adapter and is much easier to handle. If you want you can leave the adapter permanently attached to the Card Reader although I would not recommend it.

Why yes! Yes, you can! 😉

Card-to-card copies are, usually, slower for HIGH performance cards. However, if you have lower performing Class 10 or below cards, then, the transfers between the cards in the card reader will not be any issue.

I have transferred FROM a Samsung 128GB PRO micro-SD card TO a Samsung 256GB EVO (2nd generation card) and I noticed slowdowns that ranged from spikes of 3 MB/s to 90 MB/s for over 16K music files and projects to steady-state transfers from 60 MB/s to 80 MB/s. Both cards easily transfer 85+ MB/s froom computer to card reader to card. So, yeah, a slight drop from card-to-card in this Kingston reader (which is expected as it is going through several more interface layers).

However, when I transfer card-to-card FROM a higher performing card (like those Samsung cards mentioned earlier) TO a lower performing card (like my 32GB or 64GB G.Skill Class 10, SanDisk Class 10 cards or Samsung 64GB EVO 1st generation card), you will just see the same transfer speeds as from computer-to-card because of the cards' architecture limitation(s). Going the other way (lower end card to higher end card in the Kingston reader) is a moot point since, again, the lower cards are, natively, slower to begin with.

So, fast card to fast card = some slowdown but not much.
Fast card to slow card, slow card to fast, or slow to slow = no difference.
