Can I use a different size mixing bowl (5 Qt )  or larger ?

The mixer has a recessed space that's keyed to match the bottom of the included bowl.    That means the bowl locks into place with a 1/4 turn.

If you find something that covers the recessed part and is wider I assume it would work as long as it's the same height.  However, the new bowl wouldn't lock into place and may be hard to manage.

The included bowl is as tall a bowl as will fit under the mixer head as well as clearing , front to back.

Kitchenaide does offer a glass bowl of the same size.

If you need a bigger bowl you probably need a bigger mixer.  This bowl and mixer work well as a pair.  If you go larger on the bowl you may overload the mixer ...  Especially if you are going to make heavier/denser dough.

With limited storage space how tall is this item ?

You would need a minimum of 18 inches high when tilted up and 14.5 inches when down.
