Yes ,they can be put on the wall .. so far mine are just sitting on tables . Awesome speakers . I replaced the Onyko speakers that came with my surround with these and a Polk Audio CS10 center  What a difference

I purchased them for just that purpose.  They work just fine. Just make sure they a compatible with your amp, wattage rating etc.

Do I need to use an amplifier for this pair of speakers? If I have to use an amplifier do you have any suggestions which amplifier do I need to buy?

Yes, you must use an amplifier.  These aren't ultra-high end, so don't feel pressured into buying an ultra-high-end amp/receiver.  Find one that fits your needs in terms of inputs and outputs.  How many HDMI devices do you have?  Do you intend to get more?  Will you be putting this in a house that can have a separate zone (outside speakers, for example)?  I'd recommend something that is 3D and 4K passthrough compliant at the very least.  It will save you from having to re-invest down the road if you take the plunge.

To use these speakers with my Acer Chromebook laptop, do I just need to buy a receiver? Can someone recommend a receiver under $150? I'm a total newbie, so I hardly even understand what a receiver does. Do I need to buy anything else? Some kind of wires? Can you recommend specific names? Thank you.

The direct answer is yes, you would need a receiver or something similar to power these speakers, and a way to connect your Chromebook to that receiver, and wires from that receiver to these speakers.

The indirect answer is you should consider another type of speakers. These speakers are made for a home audio setup, and while you could hook these into a Chromebook with enough time, money, and effort, if you're just wanting better sound and music then buy some nice powered computer speakers. (There are plenty here on Newegg. Watch for sales and deep discounts.) They plug into the wall for power, and plug into your Chromebook with a 3.5 mm RCA cable for the signal. (The 3.5 mm RCA cable is the standard you find on almost all mobiles, tablets, and other devices. See the other end of your headphones, for example.)

If you like Klipsch -- and I do -- you could consider one of their portable battery-powered Bluetooth speakers (see "Klipsch KMC" on this site). You'd still use a 3.5 mm RCA cable to connect it, and get the bonus of being able to connect your iPod/ whatever also over Bluetooth (a limited-range wireless scheme). These Klipsch speakers and similar ones go on sale all the time all over Internet; let Google be your friend.

If you don't know what a receiver is, you might be asking for trouble to jump into such a purchase just to use these speakers! (If you want to find put what a receiver is, and what it does in a home audio setup, again let Google be your friend. There are plenty of primers online.)

How do they hook up to your receiver?

As with most home audio speakers, these are connected to your receiver with speaker wire. (See, for example, "RCA Model AH1650SN 50 ft. 16-Gauge Speaker Wire" on this site. That'd be a fine choice.)

Speaker wire is two-conductor, meaning there are two wires side-by-side just like the cords attached to electrical plugs. Cut a suitable length of wire to attach the farthest-away speaker, and strip about an inch of the plastic insulation from each wire at each end so you have four exposed wires, and twist the exposed copper strands so they don't unravel. Now do that again with the same length of speaker wire for the other speaker (even if the nearer speaker is much closer to the receiver, you want the two wires to be the same length). Then attach the bare conductors to your receiver with clamps or screw-tight "binding posts," and attach the other bare conductors to these speakers using the red and black binding posts you see in the photos.

The receiver connections will be marked with a Left Speaker red and black, and a Right Speaker red and black. The speaker wire is marked (sometimes with a visible sign, sometimes with ridge on one conductor) so you can be sure that the conductor attached to the black post on the receiver is attached to the black post on the speaker, and the red to the red. And keep the Right Speaker on the right and the Left Speaker on the left as you face them.

If this is confusing, a quick online search will return help for beginners. It's really easier to see this in a simple diagram than read it in words. It's just two wires that have four exposed connections on each.

Short version: These aren't wireless speakers. Use speaker wires.
