Question 1

I want to connect this monitor to the DisplayPort of an HP laptop (Windows 10).  Will the monitor be able to work in its highest resolution (5120x1440) without special driver software?

That depends on your laptop.  I run at 5120x1440 through Display port, so the monitor and cable can run that resolution, it depends on the graphics card in the laptop.  You can get graphics card detail from Windows Device Manager and select Display Adapters.  Then search the manufacturer for the specs to make sure your adapter can run at the resolution.
This display is almost the same as a 4K screen in number of pixels, so if it can do 4k it can run this resolution.

Question 2

Is this monitor actually a 4k monitor considering it's height only goes up to 1440?  I would think this is more appropriate to be described as multiple 2k monitors combined in a row.  This is getting confusing.

I don't think it's advertised as 4k and I wouldn't call it that. It's dual QHD. 4k is overrated for desktop displays anyway. Unless you're sitting ridiculously close to the monitor or you have a 32" or larger display then I think it's wasted. Also, graphics cards need to work really hard to push that many pixels around.

What's truly amazing is that the lack of a bezel between the effectively dual monitors really opens up the workspace. It's something you just have to experience to understand.

One of the pictures makes it look like there's a headphone jack on the side, is that what that is?  Does plugging in disable the built in speakers?

I don't use that feature or the usb, the monitor is so amazing and awesome, it's like having a full sized desktop, i love it

what video card(s) are recommended to drive this monitor?

I have a Microsoft laptop book that is connected to the LG 49 ultra wide monitor. It looks amazing and has been an awesome investment. I use the monitor for everyday use such as Word, excel, internet and ppt.

Question 5

Can two systems be displayed at the same time on the monitor,  I will be running a Macbook Pro via USBC and a Windows Desktop Via HDMI.  Can I have each OS on a section of the screen at the same time?

Yeah you can do this, there is a setting (PBP/PIP) that allows you to select from one of several possible configurations (half-half, 1/3-2/3, 1/3-1/3-1/3, small box in the corner, etc) and then choose which input is mapped to which region. So you can technically do this with 3 computers (mac, windows and linux even if you wanted). Also check out the OnScreen Control software if you get it, that lets you snap windows into place.
