I use it on an h.p. laptop running Windows 8.1 and I plug it in and it is recognised in seconds and ready to use. I also used it on my Dell desktop running Windows 7. This drive is awesome.

Can this external drive work with apple computer?

Yes, I use it with a 2012 15" Mac Book Pro running Yosemite.
Works fine. I also used it with Mavericks. Works like a charm with 
MakeMKV as a ripper and Toast Titanium as a burner.
I use the App Macgo Mac Blu-Rray player.

I just updated the firmware to 1.01, no issues at all, ever.

Will this burner create non-blue-ray dvd's or only blue-ray?

If you are asking if you can burn blank DVDs too then the answer is yes! Its a great burner and I have had no issues with DVDs or Bru-ray and I burn about 200 to 400 discs a month.

Supported operating systems:
Windows XP, Windows Vista™, Windows 7

This drive works fine with Windows 7 Professional.  No problems.  No coasters.

Although not mentioned by LG, this drive should also work with MAC systems, but I have not tried this ---  yet.

will it play regular dvds?

There is no HDMI on this drive.  It connects to a PC (or Mac) with a USB 3.0 connection.  It's fully compatible with regular DVDs.  Your ability to play them, however, will depend on the software installed on your computer.

It comes with a power supply which is required to run the drive. it is NOT bus-powered, most external burners require more juice.

Does this model (LG BE14NU40) BluRay writer work or can be configured to work with a Mac Book Pro?

I've been running this on a MBP 2013 non-retina with USB 3.0, but mainly thru bootcamp Windows 7.  On Mavericks, it does show up under burn devices, with generic drive support.  It is recognized and I can read .jpg files from CD-R and DVD-R, I have not tried burning to it or any BluRay operations. It is a tray type.  The button is a little to hard to get to when the tray is open.  It is a great writer and player.  It has worked great for me
