Is this DVD writer MAC compatible?

It works on Windows 7, Vista, XP.  It works with Ubuntu (a Linux distributtion) - all without needing any additional software drivers.  Various burning software found it without a problem.  That's the good news.  The bad news is that I don't have a Mac so I can't tell you that it will work.  You might try LG's web site, they probably have a customer support.  BTW - I have now purchased two of them - one for myself, another on behalf of a friend whose Dell notebook has a built-in BlueRay burner that wouldn't burn a regular DVD.

This sounds like a really stupid question, but this cd/dvd writer, (LG USB  GP50NB40),  is also a reader, is it not??  Meaning can I use this to read CD's, DVD's and upload to my computer , e.g., songs and albums, movies?

Yes it does read CD's and DVD's. It's a little slow in loading the discs for reading and you have to wait for it to spin up first before it becomes readable.

Windows 7 and 8.  It will burn in either, using system software BUT a 3rd party program is a better choice for more customized choices.  NTI, Nero, go google for program alternatives.

With good software, you can burn MP3 CDs and DVD MP3s - you can play 20+ songs on MP3-CDs and 1200 songs on ONE MP3-DVD.
Windows 7/8 only allows basic burning.

Unless your HP Envy has a history of USB problems, this device should work well with your computer.   It is just a standard USB DVD writer that works with I am sure 99% of all PC's and laptops.

Can I watch a DVD with this?  What type of cable do I use to connect to my laptop?

Accepted Answer

Sure, assuming that your DVD and the drive are set to the same region.  The drive comes with an attached USB cable.  You simply plug it into your laptop, let the laptop recognize the drive as an external device and then insert your DVD!  Your laptop should ask you how you want to handle DVDs and you can either choose a default action or defer the decision to reoccur each time you insert a new DVD.

Can I rip CDs from this device to my computer (to itunes on my computer)?

This will read CD's and DVD's just like the CD/DVD drive on your computer.  Ripping will require ripping software.  There is lots of software out there and some is free.  Just Google "ripping software."
