does this item support any laptop?

If your laptop or desktop has a USB 2.0 compliant USB port available you can plug this drive into that port and it should work. On a Windows 7 computer, when you plug it in, it identifies itself to the computer which then loads the driver. Windows 8 will do the same. It should also work on laptop or desktop computers that have USB 3.0 ports. For me, it works fine and smoothly on each of my computers: one is a laptop with USB 2.0,  and the other is a desktop with several USB 2.0 ports. I like it, and I am sure you will too.

Question 2

Can this product be used to read CDs and DVDs as well? I ask because I recently bought a laptop that lacks a CD drive and want to install a new OS and additional accessories that I have that came as CDs or DVDs.

I gave this as a gift so I haven't tested it myself.  Its specs certainly say that it'll read and write CDs and DVDs.  I gave to people with a laptop that lacked a CD/DVD drive.  I haven't heard any complaints.

Question 3

Is this drive compatible with a macbook pro?

Haven't tried it on a Mac product but it is Mac compatible.  Did find a review on it at the LG website that stated

"Needed an external CD/DVD drive for my new macbook pro with retina 13 inch laptop. this drive was VERY simple to use. No problems."

So I would assume it would work just fine.

Linked right up with Windows Vista without running the driver disk that came with it.  Only disc it arrived with was for Windows operating systems, didn't have a Mac disc with it, doubt it needs it.

Is this unit powered by the USB Connector?

Yes, this unit has only one cord, the USB cord, and it gets it's power from the host computer.  I have used it often but not all the time, and it works flawlessly. I use it for my Notebook computer, which does not have a CD drive, and use it to play CDs when I need it.

Question 5

I am wondering about the number of usb drive slots required.  My tablet has one 3.0 USB port (which is backward compatible with 2.0 USB), as well as a micro 2.0 USB port.

Is this external dvd drive able to operate with the ports available on my tablet?

Yes. This drive only requires the one usb cable that is provided, it carried both the data and power in one.

Am I able to install windows 7 or 8 on a computer with this without any operating systems currently on it? I'm building my own computer please let me know!!

Hello Andre;
The short answer is 'Yes' if......
The answer has more to do with your motherboard BIOS settings than the external DVDRW.

You'll need to check in your BIOS if it has the ability to boot from external devices. If so, then set your BIOS to boot from external devices, then make sure your DVDRW is 'seen' by your motherboard.
You may also want to go into the BIOS settings and change the boot order to boot from the external DVDRW first. If not you will have to select the DVDRW when the system powers up. Don't forget to make sure you have the O/S disc already in the DVDRW

Does this have a tray that opens and closes or do you push to DVD/CD's in?

there's a button on the front. push and tray slides out. button is in front edge of tray. very much like a laptop style dvd drive.

Specs don't say whether it is slot or tray load.  Which is it?

If I understood your question correctly, it is tray load, it just like old CDROM that a tray come out then you place disc on it.
