Yes it is self-powered and works great.  No power cord needed.

do i need to download software for this drive?

No, you do not. I have used this with Windows 7, 8, and 10 and CentOS 6 and 7 and Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, and 17.10 and never had to install a driver for any of those operating systems. I've also used it with dozens of PCs and laptops to boot from CDs/DVDs and have never found a BIOS that didn't recognize it as a bootable device.

I have an ASUS laptop - 2.16 Ghz Intel processor, 4 Ghz of RAM, running WIN 10 OS - is this drive compatible?

If your laptop has an available USB 2.0 port it should be compatible. Win 10 should install the CD/DVD drive without the need for a driver.

Yes, so long as you have a USB port to plug it into, it should be simple to plug-in and use.

I have 10.11.1 there is no problem and never has been.  The plastic seems a bit thin but it runs and plays like a charm. No Probs.

No, this unit does not play/burn bluray, only DVD or CD.

I don't know I use Windows PC.  I can say on my Windows PC this is a nice little DVD drive, fast and quite!
