Question 1

I see this model is a Blu-Ray "Combo" drive.  What is it combined with that these other blu-ray drives don't have?  Others don't say "combo" but still burn dvd's too, so not sure why it is significant

It is a combination Blu-ray and DVD drive, although it is only a bare-bones drive.  It doesn't come with anything extra, so you can't actually play Blu-ray movies or anything like that unless you have your own software to do so.

You may want to look elsewhere for value for money if you want a drive that includes software and the like.  When I purchased, it was a good value for money but the listing seems to swing by 300% on this item for some reason.

Well i bought this product and cannot get it to play any blue ray dvd's. I installed the firmware update and still no luck. i sent LG and email and waiting for a response back. Is there any trick that i dont know about to get it working?

you need to have special software to play the movies in windows dose not have a default decoder try this you can down load there soft wear demo for thirty days free then buy it if you like It   please let me know if this helps  and the bad thing is often they don't put this in with oem drives

Question 4

Since the newest firmware which I just downloaded and installed I think it was 1.01 (from last November) now my drive is useless. I keep getting DPC watchdog errors/BSODs. This is hte only update I have done so I know it's being caused by this. My question is anyone else have this issue and if so did they fix it and how? or did they just junk it? Only thing I can see is that it might be an 8.1 issue since it claims Win 8 compatibility on the LG site.

Sorry, I cannot really answer that particular question.  What I can answer though is, I am not impressed with this product.  I purchased one earlier and it failed repeatedly in trying to burn to a Blu-Ray disk (a few different brands, both 25GB and the true 50GB disks).  I returned it for a replacement.  This time, I guess I just assumed I had a bad drive and I took too long to get around to trying the new one.  Again, no luck burning Blu-Rays.  But it was past the time limit on returning it or getting it replaced.  I still have it.  I don't bother trying to burn Blu-Rays.  BTW: I am experienced with what it takes to use Blu-Ray properly and I do have a setup on another machine that works (which is why I don't care that much).  I believe this LG device is simply a funky product.

Will this play HD-DVD's?  I know LG used to make a HD-DVD, blu-Ray combo a couple of years ago and looking for something to play my HD-DVD movies since the Xbox-0ne won't support the HD-DVD add on drive for the 360. Thank you

no the LG UH12NS29 will NOT play HD-DVD's just Blu-ray and regular DVD's.

Is it compatible with Windows 10?

Yes. I have been running Windows 10 for months now and I haven't had any problems with it. Works great!

MY PC is a Dell XPS 8700, 64 bit with intel processer.  Questions: 1. Is the LgModel UH12NS29 compatible with my PC?  2.  Do I need a driver to install it?  If yes, does the driver come with the Optical drive?

Nothing comes with the drive. Works perfectly with windows 7, windows 8 or 8.1 should automatically install the drivers. However, to view blue ray dvds, you will need additional software.

can the drive play 4k movies?

Honestly I do not know. I do not have any movies that are in 4k. But If I had to guess I would say probably not. The 4k players are only recently coming out and I bought mine months ago and there was no mention of 4k capabilities.
