3 pack includes the controller, which will control fan and rgb for up to 4 inputs ( which are from 1 to 4 fans each, using the clip-together feature). So you could technically run 16 total fans from 1 box. Each 3pack comes with a box, so if you buy 6, 9, or 12 fans you'll have spares. Good luck finding them in stock - they are pretty high demand currently.
