Do you have to use the VGA cables with the PS2 or can you use a standard VGA cable? I do not need PS2 and I don't want all the extra cable dangling and unconnected.

You can use either the VGA cables with PS2 or just use the VGA cable.  I have both USB and PS2 mouse and keyboards so I mix and match however I want without having to buy more updated stuff.  I am running a pieced together win7 system with as many older components (mouse, keyboard, VGA) as it will support and a newer camera system.  Plugging the PS2 keyboard and a USB mouse into the KVM lets me change transparent to the system I want to work on at an instant.
