Question 1

What is the internet through put on this? I need one to support a 160mbps connection.

The WAN ports are all capable of 1000Mbps/Gigabit ethernet connections. So if you have Gigabit ethernet from whatever drop is giving you 160Mbps to this router, it will handle that 160Mbps just fine.

Ive never seen this router fail to hit full switched 1000Mbps on its ports, so I have no reason to think it couldnt handle 160Mbps if you can feed that to it.

Question 2

I would like to keep my kids network (SkyDog) separate from the home network.  If I use the DMZ port for the kids network, would this keep all foolish activity from infecting the home network?
I also have a VoIP phone, is there a port dedication for VoIP traffic that has priority over all other traffic?

Hi,
As I understand it putting the kids on the DMZ would not necessarily keep other systems safe; you would all still use the same IP family (subnet) and some viruses may scan all IPs in the same subnet. In fact, putting them on a DMZ may expose them to more threats than being being the firewall. You might get better results letting them be on their own VLAN (Virtual LAN). That should set up a better partition between everyone else and them.
 In regards to VOIP I connected my VOIP equipment to one of the ports on the back of the Linksys and set priority highest on that specific port.

I need to know if this will support internet through put speeds of 170+ mbps for PC's plugged directly into it?

I would check the specs on this directly on the LinkSys/Cisco web site. The more important part of this question is your internal network interface card (system board mounted or separate bus mounted) and your cable configuration (CAT 5e or 6) and length of cable from PC to router. What is the speed of your system board bus? RAM speed/cache and how much? CPU speed/cache and how many cores? Accessing additional cores? HDD speed, cache and type? All of this will make a difference in through put.

Do you have this tpe of router with were less options ?

Hi - if I understand you correctly, you want to know if this model comes with less options.

This router come in only two varieties - one has a single WAN port, and the other (shown here) has two WAN ports.

If you are like most people and have just one internet connection, the LRT214 would be best for you.  If you have two internet providers, choose this model, the LRT224.

Both are very easy to set up and manage.

NOTE: these two routers do not have built in wi-fi.  You will need to connect your own access point (Linksys has several good choices) if you need wireless networking.

KISS Question: Are the two WAN interfaces independent of each other?  Can I route through my ISP on one and use two to route internally?  I am try to create a home lab.

Will this block and intercept port 53 to force people to use machine as DNS and we can control say to opendns, I know linksys/cisco bought opendns and I want to run all network traffic mandatory through it?

This question seems a little confusing.  If it blocks Port 53, no machines connected will have access to any DNS services on the network (as all DNS requests are blocked). Secondly, are you referring to WAN users accessing DNS, or LAN users?  Obviously, WAN users will have their own provision, but LAN users can manually set the preferred DNS server.  A quick Google search will give you a step-by-step on how to do this.

I guess it would be easier to answer your question if we knew what your final goal is.  Are you wanting to create/manage your own private addresses that only connections on your LAN/VPN can access?  Or are you wanting to redirect Internet traffic for connections on your LAN?  Their are easier ways to accomplish these beside through a router.

Does this router limit the subnet mask on each VLAN to 255.255.255.0? Or can I set each one to 255.0.0.0?

In most cases you want to use a switch connected to this router's LAN which is handling the VLAN and subnet definition. Set your default route in that switch to the private IP of the router, where the router will handle all of your interVLAN routing that you have configured.

More direct to your question, I cannot imagine any switching device which would limit subnetting in the manner which you have described. I think its important to distinguish that the specs on this router state that it supports 801.q VLAN tagging and up to 5 VLANS for interVLAN routing, not the actual layer2/3 VLAN engine. I would be quite shocked if a router had built in features for the actual VLAN interface creation.

Yes, the Linksys LRT224 does support IKE v2. If you do a Google search for "Linksys LRT224 IKE V2" it should be the 1st link at the top of the page.

Once you have the manual open look on page 55 to find out how Linksys use this IPSec security protocol.

Other than 2 WAN ports, does the Linksys LRT224 have the same features as a Linksys LRT214?

According to the specs on the Linksys site, it appears so.

Keep in mind that the LRT224 provides fail-over AND bandwidth sharing across both WAN ports.

On a side note, the OpenVPN feature works wonderfully.
