Can you connect a "hardwire" ethernet connection to the node that's not connected to your modem for wired internet access?

Yes. There are specific steps to implement the "hardwire" backbone that I found on the Linksys website a while back but essentially you pair up the wired/unwired first then move the unwire to the new location and plug into hardwire backbone. At that point it should work.

Two major differences: - a repeater provides wifi at only half of the speed of the original router. VELOP does not decrease the speed - a repeater will use a network name different than the original router, so if you walk around the house, your device (e.g. iPhone, iPad) has to switch from one network to another. VELOP system has only one network name, same in the whole house

In reading the reviews here, I'm still confused as to whether this has more advanced capabilities, such as routing, firewal, NAT, etc capabilities. I have several applications on my home network that need to be NAT'd to external ports so I can access them from outside my network. Is this system capable of that, or is it just strictly a WiFi Mesh system?

It can do port forwarding, yes. It took me like 30 seconds to set it up using my phone to allow remote access to my raspberry pi
