No, this is just a USB DVD player, no software included to play DVD's. Had to download and install VLC Media Player v.2.1.5 since Lenovo laptop with Windows 8.1 had no DVD playback software included. Windows Media Player on Windows 8 no longer supports DVD playback! Go Figure!

Will this item read music cds and movies like a disk drive on a standard laptop? Also, is this compatible with the Acer Chromebook 15 and the chrome opperating system?

This is in every way a normal CD/DVD drive, it just cannot burn to writable media or read Blu-ray discs, but the USB connection isn't treated differently enough from internal connections to be a problem (at worst, possibly a little slower when ripping/copying from a disc).  As for ChromeOS, I haven't tried it on that in particular, but I do use it on Linux (which ChromeOS is built on) and it works great, so it should work as well as any optical drive would under ChromeOS.  Not that I know to what extent ChromeOS supports optical drives, if your inquiry about playing movies was about doing so under ChromeOS (not just on a normal laptop as it sounded like you were asking), then I don't expect ChromeOS has anything to decrypt and play commercial DVDs, as it is far outside the normal duties of ChromeOS and since DVD decoding incurs a licensing cost it wouldn't make sense for them to pay that when they don't include optical drives on any of their hardware (for context, even Micro$oft has dropped "free" DVD playback support from Windows10).  If there's a program under ChromeOS for it, CD playback would likely work, though, as that format is not encumbered with DRM or special licensing, so it can be played free of charge (ironically, if you rip a CD to mp3, that DOES require a license to play back, though).  Anyway... YES this optical drive should not have any trouble working with whatever operating system you connect it to, just temper your expectations to whatever extent the OS you use is designed to work with optical media.

This JUST a READER only, not a burner. It was advertised as a DVD-ROM.

I have used it and had no troubles at all. It is not a motorized tray, it is a flip top.

It can read all CD-ROMs as well as DVD ROMs. It comes with a short {8-9 inches}, non-pigtail USB cable.

You could not beat the price of ten dollars. Especially useful for newer laptops/netbooks that come without a DVD unit.

Yes and no.  We originally purchased this monitor for a macbook air (ours is a couple of years old) and while the monitor worked in 2560x1600 mode (which this monitor does poorly), it did not work at the 4K resolution.  Double check the specs on your macbook since if you can't run in the 4K mode, there are much better 2560x1600 monitors out there.
