The LITE-ON iHDS118-104 8U is a high-performance SATA DVD-ROM and CD-ROM drive. With a fast SATA interface, it plays back DVD-ROM discs at a stunning speed of 18X and CD-ROM discs at 48X. Featuring SMART-X function, it automatically adjusts the read speed based on the quality of the disc to ensure the highest accuracy for data and track reads. Thanks to the exclusive ABS mechanism, it effectively reduces vibration & noise during high speed rotating. You can enjoy watching movies without distracting drive noise. Thanks to its easy-tray design, it enables horizontal & vertical operation.
Serial ATA Connection
Compared to the older Parallel ATA interface, the SATA interface delivers higher transfer rates and better airflow in PC casings. It provides future proof compatibility with the latest motherboards.
SMART-X Function
SMART-X function adjusts CD-DA / VCD / DVD data extraction to a fastest allowable speed, according to both data request rate from host and disk quality.
ABS System
The exclusive ABS (automatic balancing system) effectively reduces vibration and noise even at the highest speeds, ensuring quiet stable drive operation.
Easy-Tray Design
The Lite-On iHDS118-04 8U supports both 8 cm & 12cm discs. The easy-tray design allows for both horizontal & vertical operation.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: I don’t see where in the description it said it was a OEM drive so a little surprised to find it delivered in bubble wrap, not a box with documentation.
Overall Review: As to the reviewers complaining it doesn’t read a blank disc, well, it is a DVD-ROM drive. Read only! An unwritten DVD I think wouldn’t be readable by any ROM drive. Right?
Pros:
Fast Reads (rated correctly)
Relatively quiet drive
Cons:
Does not support C2 markers
Build quality suspect (and possibly dangerous)
VERY short lifespan
Overall Review:
I bought this drive as an OEM unit from a local electronics shop (verified new) to rip my CD collection to FLAC. Drive worked well for about two weeks, though it didn't support C2 markers (still no detectable artifacts on my recordings). I was easily able to achieve the rated 48x read speeds on clean CDs (CDs with scratches will cause the drive to spin slower.
But I absolutely cannot recommend it. Why? Well, last night, I was in the process of ripping a CD and heard a loud bang followed by a foot-long spark shooting out of the back of my case. Thinking it was one of the other components that just surged past a thermal limit, I did the smell test all over my motherboard. Since everything was fine there, I could narrow it down to either the power supply or this drive (case has two chambers; one for the motherboard/components, the other for the power supply and any 3.5" drives). I was unable to manually open the tray, which told me it would remain stuck shut. After removing it for a closer inspection, I could hear that the disc inside had shattered. It and its contents now sound like a maraca. No bueno.
I've been seeing this issue pop up with multiple 3.5" ODDs, but most reviews don't mention whether it's mounted horizontally or vertically. Since mine was installed vertically (only mounting option), I'm thinking that might have been the source of the problem. If you're in a similar boat, I'd say pass and go with an external unit.
Hopefully, you have one of these and haven't run into the same problem. I can tell you that mine failed...catastrophically. I'm just lucky it's the only component that I lost last night. Others might not be so lucky.
Pros: Low price
Cons: Kind of had to Frankenstein this into my build, that was more of a pc case error though
Pros: Cheap and simple to install. Works well to install drivers and OS.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: Would recommend to others.
Pros: it does it job
Cons: horribly noisy
Pros: none that I could find
Cons: i got mine broken like a few months ago and its never worked properly. I had to get a friend to look at the code of the system just to install my drivers for everything and we had to do that every time we put in a disk it was to time consuming so I just unplugged it now its just a husk sitting in my computer
Pros:
Fast, smooth, and quiet
Excellent tray design and operation
Windows 7 recognized it instantly
Cons: none
Overall Review: I replaced a 10 year old Lite-on drive with this one and saw the improvement immediately. Faster, smoother, quieter than the previous model. Casing is more solid as well. DEFINITELY recommend this DVD-ROM drive

Pros: Made January 2020, latest model iHDS118-04 9U. Has black tooled logo, not silkscreen.
Cons: All OK.
Overall Review: May get a second for an old style ATX case. The replaced DVD-RW was migrated to an external enclosure for longer life.
