My laptop's earphone port doesn't work, so I was hoping that this speaker system might use the USB port for its power & sound output. Would this work in my situation?

These speakers use the USB port as to sound and quality your sound card plays a big part in that.  The speakers have good sound, but you must remember that the are only 1.2 Watts, so don't expect them to have a large volume range.  For me, I use them as good utility speakers with my laptop. Easy to plug in.

no, Baldy, there is no headphone jack. Good point, because on Asus speakers that came with another PC there is a headphone jack.  I suppose you don't have a headphone jack on your PC?

Sorry I cannot really answer this question.  I have however used these on another computer and they worked very well.  I have not tried on other games machines.

Will these speakers also work with a tv that has a USB port?

NO they will NOT work. I love these speakers for 'Thin Client' terminals that do not have audio output. I use them on laptops and tablets so that I do not need to have an additional power adapter (the USB provides power and Audio). However I do not believe that I have never seen a TV with USB capable audio output. You will have to check the TV manual, but I do not think so.
