what are the side buttons and one on the top do?

Side buttons are "back" and "forward". Their behavior is defined by the currently active app. In browsers and file managers they do what you'd expect them to do: go back and go forward. In games you can bind actions to them. Also, you can redefine them using software like X-Mouse Button Control. The extra middle button on top doesn't work. Back in the day when this mouse was the thing to have, Logitech bundled it with their software. When installed, the button allowed you to invoke a "running apps" menu and quickly switch to another app that way. Albeit, even then, it was virtually useless, because it didn't show apps running in tray. You can't get the software from anywhere these days and without it the button is just not visible to the system.
