Will this plug directly into any usb 2.0 slot without using adapter?

No adapters needed. USB 3.0 standard has so-called backward compatibility. It means USB 3.0 devices are compatible with any USB 2.0 units. In that case you just can't benefit the high speed USB 3.0 provides

Is this compatible with Windows 10?

Yes these are compatible with windows 10. They have no software installed on them and are completely blank space to be used at your discretion to store whatever you want on them. I have 3 of them and have used them on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 all with no problems. They will run on old usb 1.1, 2.0 or the current 3.0 standard devices.

I hate to ask a dumb question, but here it is: will this product work with Windows operating system?

I can confirm it working with WinVista and Win7

What file system is this big drive formatted with? Thanks!

The 256GB model was formatted with FAT32. I reformatted to exFAT, which is far more appropriate for this size, and generally superior. Plus, exFAT is supported in most OSs now, although sometimes needing added software.
