Is this compatible with Windows (including Windows 10) and Mac OS?

It should. It's really no different than plugging in a usb keyboard.

Works great with Windows 7 and 8 for us.

Will this card reader work with Quickbooks Online?

These readers are really just text emulators. Like a keyboard. If one were to open Notepad or Word with one of these attached, and swipe a card they see a large string of numbers and characters etc. SO all the device really does is take the contents of the magnetic strip and makes your computer think you typed it in.
That being said, the receiving end Quick Books Online would have to be ready to receive that string which according to this post, they are, but thier software is going to decode it differently and apparently you need one their types of swipers for that to work. 
It's against the rules to post a link, but google: Inuit POS hardware swiper - they're a little more expensive.

Can anyone tell me if this is compatible with Quickbooks Online?

The data from the device is entered exactly as keyboard input, so if Quickbooks Online accepts input from a keyboard, it should be able to accept the input from the MagTek.

I am a new Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer, I have been instructed I need this item as part of my business.  I understand that this will allow me to swipe a California Drivers License and automatically populate specific information to a required state document.  Do you understand this product to be able to do such a thing?  Does it come with specific installation software?

Hi Eric,

There is no software required to swipe cards. We have it configured on a Windows 7 machine.

Once you swipe a card, it will act as if someone is typing at the keyboard. Make sure that the receiving application has the focus, and knows what to do with the information coming from a driver's license. It will read a MI license, so I'm assuming that it will read a CA license.
