It does read both credit and debit cards, however the security piece depends on the system you are using the swiper with. Anything that uses the internet or wifi system is inherently not that secure versus telecharge systems. Also, if you are using a personal computer or multiple computers there is the danger of viruses that capture information.

This units use and actions is not based on what input device used to access it on your computer just simply reads a magnetic strip and displays that according to you software capabilities!!

Do this works with QuickBooks?

This functions like a keyboard, so it will input data into Quickbooks.  However, it reads all of the data on the card and then adds an "Enter".  The extra data and the Enter key can prevent some applications from accepting the data properly.  For our lock system we have to read the data into Notepad and then copy and paste the data into the application.  Our lock application strips out the extra data symbols, but cannot handle the "Enter" key which closes out the application before the user data is fully keyed in.  I hope this helps you.
