Will this work on my Gateway SX2800? Do I need thermal paste?

I think it will work on your Gateway as it uses an LGA775 socket. The catch is the clearance. This cooler rises slightly higher than the Intel cooler (as I recall) so you have to be sure that will not be a problem for you in your case. It really should not be. As for thermal paste, it comes with thermal paste in the box. Be sure to clean off the old thermal paste first and to not use too much when you reapply (a common mistake). There are many good descriptions and videos for thermal paste application if you search.
