What is the platform. Does it attach to the computer and how?

I will assume you mean physical platform.  The picture shows it: it is a 2.5" foot with an 1/4" "catch" on one end and a flexible tab on the other.  With a little shaping,  and the catch to the front, it hangs on the top of a monitor reasonably well.  But it is pretty unstable on flat surfaces and the surface of the tab does not adhere well to popular "double sided sticky" products - my favorite way method of making such hardware stay put....

can this be side mounted to a monitor?

The base is a rubber coated piece of metal that can be bent and manipulated to sit where you want.  Mine rests by gravity on top of the monitor.

To be able to mount it beside the monitor you would need either a shelf or other horizontal surface to set it on.  You could also swivel the base 90 deg. and straighten it out and attach it to the monitor by some means like gluing it.

Question 4

We are doing live streaming of beads, which require extreme closeups and sharp focus.  How close does this camera focus?

I just tested it, and it will focus well at about one inch. The beads and the cam need to be still to do that, as it will hunt for a focus if the distance changes even a little bit.

What is the dynamic range of the camera?  If I want to use it to look at the output of a bright multi-colored light, is the image going to saturate and look white on the brightest spots?

You should be fine. LifeCam Cinema is a 720p model, equipped with a CMOS OV9712 sensor from OmniVision. Those sensors are quite sensitive, including IR. It uses a USB 2.0 interface.

The specs say:
