The Covenant has suffered from Civil war. The Elites have broken away from the Covenant and the Prophets to side with humans against their old masters. Ring-like weapons, known as Halos, stand at the center of the conflict. These Halos were left by the Forerunners, an ancient race of legend, to be used only as a last resort to obliterate the Flood, a sentient all-consuming parasite that has been reawakened.

One Halo has been destroyed and a second has been activated. The Flood looms ever nearer. The Covenant has located Earth, subdued its inhabitants, and found an ancient relic beneath the African sands.
