Does it have soft touch or quiet touch keys?

This is the "Retail" version of the product, and while the keys aren't loud, they are louder than the "Business" version, *especially* the space bar. I use these keyboards exclusively at home and at work, and I make sure to always buy the "Business" version now.

The Business one clearly says "Business" in the product name. You can also tell which is which by looking at the Windows key. The Retail version has a small Windows logo and the word "Start". The Business version has an actual physical depression in the key with just the Windows logo in it. The Business version is actually cheaper by a dollar at the time I'm posting this, which is nice.

Question 2

Is there an extra (open) USB port on this keyboard? It would be great if it were possible to "free up" the USB port that this keyboard uses by having an open USB port built into the keyboard. That would make it easier to connect in iPad or iPod (or other USB device) to the computer (by plugging in to the keyboard).

No, there is no extra (open) USB port on the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000.

I have Windows XP, 32 bit, will this be compatible with it?

The box only lists compatibility with windows 8, windows rt, windows 7, and windows vista, along with mac. I use windows 7. I was an xp user and didn't want to change but I'm glad I did.

Function keys?  They do not seem to work

Make sure that the "Function Lock" is enabled.  If it is, the function keys should work perfectly.  "Function Lock" is toggled by pressing the "F Lock" key (located to the right of F12).  To verify the "Function Lock" is enabled, check the 4 LEDs at the bottom center of the keyboard.  They are (from top to bottom)...
Num Lock
Caps Lock
Scroll Lock
Function Lock

can this be used with a lap top?

As long as the laptop has a USB port, yes. I've even used it with my Microsoft Surface tablet.

No it has a wire. It has a USB connection. Great thing, because no changing the batteries. You can see in the last picture it has a usb connection.

I cannot imagine it wouldn't be, but I use Windows 7. Even though I can't help with that, got to say if you want an ergo KB, you can't go wrong with this one. I've been through a half-dozen over the last ten years, which you might think is not a testimonial, but if you type as much as me (Litigation Support, Writer, etc.) you'd know it is. I use another KB on my gaming comp which is a different story. This one is solid, well-laid out, full featured, inexpensive, perfect. Good luck.
