Just so I understand if I buy the retail version of pro and want to upgrade hardware in the future I have to buy a whole new version?

No.
That's why you buy the retail version. So you can upgrade parts (and even the entire computer) and reload it as many times as you need on it.
That's also why it's more expensive than the OEM version that only lets you upgrade some parts and still reload on just that computer only or use for "repair" of the software only.

is it 64 bit? thank you. some products specifically state 64 bit while  others state 32/64 bit thank you

Can I upgrade my windows 8.1 pro to windows 10 pro without losing my previous settings, programs, docs, etc.?

Accepted Answer

Yes.  Search for "Create installation media for Windows". Once at the Microsoft web site, there should be a choice of win 7, 8 and 10.  Select the link for win 10 and then follow the instructions for upgrading or creating install media.

The install media is run from within the current windows installation and will give a choice of upgrading while keeping all applications and settings in place.

Having an install media disk available is a good idea in any event in case your windows installation develops serious problems.  You are able to reinstall windows and leave all your applications and settings in place

Is this version transferable to a new computer? For instance, if i replace the motherboard or reformat the hard drive will i still be able to use this copy of windows or will i have buy another copy?

This is the retail version.  The short answer is that you are allowed to use this version on a different computer as long as you are only have it installed on a single computer.  As per the Microsoft answers website:
"Full version (Retail):
- Includes transfer rights to another computer.
- Doesn't require a previous qualifying version of Windows.
- Expensive

OEM :
OEM versions of Windows are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following:
- OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel
- OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on
- OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard
- OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system"

I am running windows 7 pro and want to upgrade to windows 10 pro will this work?

This will try to load Windows 10, but it will most likely not work with your older hardware. Windows 10 requires qualified up-to-date equipment.

Can this be used on multiple computers?

You will need a new authorization key code for each device. The included key is only for one device. The USB Drive contains the current Windows 10 Pro install software. It can be used to install on many devices (like repairing or fresh install). This package (key) is only meant for one device.

Can you copy the USB software to a DVD or Blu-Ray to create a hard copy backup and use it also to install windows 10 pro from without using up any number of install limits??

I never tried a USB to DVD or Blu-Ray copy of the software.  However, I used the "Create a Recovery Drive" feature in Windows 10 to make a bootable flash drive and also a bootable DVD and selected to copy the system files as well.   The copied media contained an installable  Windows 10 OS for the particular device on which it was created.  I tested the recovery media by booting from it.

I do not believe you can copy it and expect it to be usable. It may install, but, may not activate. As far as install limits are concerned there should not be any, as long as you own the usb and use it on your own equipment that you build, as long as it is only on one device at a time.

Yes, that should work.  I also went from Windows 7 Pro OEM to windows 10 pro with this.

Windows 10 setup will keep, upgrade, replace and might require that you install new drivers through Windows Update or from the manufacturers website."
