Can this be reformatted to work with a mac?

It's formatted NTFS. MacOS can support NTFS for writing. You'll have to google for the recipe as newegg doesn't permit URLs.

Is it come with shock proof design?

No.  These are simple, platter-based hard drives that are mounted into plastic enclosures.  While they are inexpensive, reliable backup solutions, they do NOT offer any protection of the drive from being dropped, especially if will powered up.  If you want "shock protection", buy a SATA3-based solid state hard drive and mount it in your own external enclosure instead.

An external hard (disk) drive. WD makes another My Passport product which is explicitly labeled SDD. This is called a Hard Drive.

Yes it will, though you may need to re-partition the drive using disk utility from the rocket dock.

I'm using mine as a music file storage HD, and it does NOT require anything beyond being plugged in. (I will say that it's required more time to full "present" itself to the operating system - Ubuntu, in my case. I just give it lots of time to spin up after plugging it in to a USB port, and it works fine.)

The MyPassport line of portable HDDs are not designed with excessive shock in mind, for shock absorption you may want to look into a drive specifically designed for rugged applications.
