Two questions: Did this thing actual work for you? And, will it work without a USB power source?

Somewhat. I "think" you do get a video signal if you just plug the wires in (HDMI and composite), BUT, it isn't actually translated to NTSC. Meaning, you DO need to plug in the USB power cable for it to actually do the work. So, what I did, was mounted a USB Wall Charger (to a power cable), with duct tape, to/near my Blu-Ray player so I can plug the  USB power cable into the adapter FIRST every time, that way it always works properly. Then, I plug the HDMI cable in, and then the composite in. Then everything should be "fine and dandy" As long as you plug the USB in first though and not the other cables, it should work fine.

Would this work to connect an N64 (which has RCA cables) to an HDMI TV?

no its to connect HDMI to RCA not RCA to HDMI. So you could connect a PS4 to an older TV but not an N64 to a new TV
