so this has 1 or 4 ethernet ports? picture shows 4 description says 1? confusing!

There are 4 ethernet ports, but there is a cover over 3 of them, so you typically only see the 1 port.  These ports are for Link Aggregation (LAG) as DOCSIS 3.1 can support higher than gigabit speeds.  This device is not a router and will not NAT.

Will this work with RCN?

Glad to answer.  Sadly it is not compatible with RCN.  This model and a Netgear model....not yet.  My Motorola is great and I highly recommend when it becomes compatible.   I have Cox services.

RJ-45 is a physical specification of a connector. "Gigabit Ethernet"is electrical standard. 10 and 100 Mbit/s Ethernet can also be transmitted over CAT5/CAT6 cables terminated with RJ-45 connectors.

Is it correct that other than port 0 (the bottom one?) the other 3 ethernet ports on the modem are only for use for port bonding (once DOCSIS 3.1 is available in your area)?
Thus, in order to connect more devices, one needs a gigabit router or switch - does that router/switch also have to support port bonding?  Or just one Cat 6/gigabit cable will do?

One open and 3 masked 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) LAN ports allow connection of any SINGLE device with an Ethernet port including a router, Windows/Mac computer, HDTV, game station. The multiple Ethernet ports are not for connecting multiple devices; they allow connection to a router that can bond more than one Ethernet port to achieve speeds over 1Gbps when supported by your cable service.
