Question 1

MSI ThunderboltM3 vs Gigabyte GC-ALPINE RIDGE: which Thunderbolt 3 card is a better fit?

Accepted Answer

These cards have a similar core configuration: two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports, a PCIe x4 interface, DisplayPort input, 40Gbps Thunderbolt connectivity, and multi-device daisy chaining. Choose the MSI ThunderboltM3 when your motherboard is on MSI's supported compatibility list and you want the smaller card design. Choose the Gigabyte GC-ALPINE RIDGE when your compatible Gigabyte motherboard or system benefits from its documented power-delivery support and additional HDMI output. Motherboard header and BIOS compatibility should determine the purchase before brand preference.

Question 2

Can I use the MSI ThunderboltM3 in a laptop, or is it for desktop PCs?

Accepted Answer

The MSI ThunderboltM3 is designed for desktop PCs because it installs in a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot and connects to an internal Thunderbolt motherboard header. It is not a portable laptop accessory. For laptop use, choose a computer with built-in Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4 support instead of an internal add-in card. Before buying the MSI card, confirm that the desktop motherboard supports the required header, BIOS settings, and DisplayPort signal routing.

Question 3

MSI ThunderboltM3 vs ASUS ThunderboltEX 4: should I choose Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4?

Accepted Answer

Choose the MSI ThunderboltM3 when your motherboard and peripherals are built around Thunderbolt 3 and you need a straightforward 40Gbps add-on card for an older compatible system. Choose the ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 when you want USB4 device compatibility, DisplayPort 1.4 support for up to 8K displays, up to 100W USB-C charging, and a newer Thunderbolt 4 platform. For existing Thunderbolt 3 storage, audio, dock, and eGPU devices, the MSI card can provide the required Thunderbolt 3 connectivity without upgrading the rest of the system.

Question 4

Is MSI ThunderboltM3 worth buying instead of using a standard USB PCIe expansion card?

Accepted Answer

The MSI ThunderboltM3 is the better choice when you need Thunderbolt-specific features such as up to 40Gbps connectivity for Thunderbolt devices, external PCIe storage, an eGPU, Thunderbolt displays, low-latency audio equipment, or multi-device daisy chaining. A standard USB expansion card is more suitable when you only need additional USB ports and do not use Thunderbolt peripherals. The MSI card requires a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot, a compatible Thunderbolt motherboard header, and DisplayPort input for video output.

Question 5

MSI ThunderboltM3 vs ASUS ThunderboltEX 3-TR: which card should I buy?

Accepted Answer

Choose the MSI ThunderboltM3 when you have a supported MSI motherboard and primarily need two Thunderbolt 3 ports, 40Gbps Thunderbolt connectivity, 4K display support, daisy chaining, external storage, or an eGPU. Choose the ASUS ThunderboltEX 3-TR when you need DisplayPort 1.4 support, up to 8K video output, or USB-C charging up to 100W on one port and 27W on the other. Both cards require a compatible motherboard header and DisplayPort input from the motherboard or graphics card.

Question 6

Who is the MSI ThunderboltM3 suitable for?

Accepted Answer

It is suitable for desktop users who need Thunderbolt 3 connectivity for fast external storage, audio recording, external graphics, docking, or daisy-chained peripherals. It is not a travel device or laptop dock because it is an internal PCIe add-on card that must be installed inside a compatible desktop.

Question 7

Can the MSI ThunderboltM3 support multiple displays and daisy-chained devices?

Accepted Answer

It supports DisplayPort 1.2 input with up to 4096 × 2160 resolution at 60 Hz or 24 Hz, depending on the system and display configuration. It also supports Thunderbolt daisy chaining, with MSI specifying up to six devices per port and up to 12 devices total across both ports.

Question 8

Do I need to connect DisplayPort cables for video to work?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For Thunderbolt video output, connect the DisplayPort output from your graphics card or motherboard to the corresponding DisplayPort input on the ThunderboltM3. Without that connection, the Type-C ports support USB data but may not carry a DisplayPort video signal.

Question 9

How fast are the MSI ThunderboltM3 ports?

Accepted Answer

The two Thunderbolt 3 Type-C ports support up to 40 Gbps with Thunderbolt devices and up to 10 Gbps with USB 3.1 devices. Actual performance also depends on the connected device, cable, PCIe configuration, and system support.

Question 10

Can the MSI ThunderboltM3 carry video from my graphics card?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but the graphics card or motherboard must send DisplayPort input to the add-on card. The card provides two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports and supports DisplayPort 1.2 input for up to 4K at 60 Hz or 24 Hz. It does not convert an HDMI output into Thunderbolt video by itself.
