NEC Display Solutions LCD2090UXi-BK 20.1" UXGA 1600 x 1200 D-Sub, DVI-I, DVI-D LCD Monitor

Pros: Replaced 2 Trinitron CPD-e540's with a pair of these. Indescribably amazing color reproduction, brightness, and sharpness. High color accuracy, even when uncalibrated. Very good viewing angle. Comes with ALL necessary cables. ColorComp (when it works) probably exceeds the consistency of your final output device (printer, DTP, etc.). Friendly USA-based tech support. Finally a flat panel capable of replacing a high-end CRT.

Cons: In some situations (low ambient light, dark images) there is some visible backlight bleed in lower corners. Bought a pair; one had a faulty Colorcomp factory profile, the other had a backlight die after 30 hours of use. (NEC replaced the broken one without hassle, I have not tried to fix the colorcomp issue under warranty; it's not a deal-breaker.)

Overall Review: A display for the price of a small Laptop. These IPS panels have an unparalleled image, but it's difficult for some people to justify such a relatively high price tag, especially with potential reliability issues. Luckily it comes with a 4-year warranty and excellent tech support. Slower response time than a TN panel, not ideal for gaming.

Pros: Absolutely fantastic color. Good greys. Great brightness (if you're into that sort of thing -- I like my displays dark). The menu is easy to use and well laid-out for all common features. No dead/stuck/bright pixels to be found. I haven't seen color like this since I got rid of my last Trinitron CRT-based monitor (a Viewsonic P95f+). I use the NEC as part of a dual-monitor rig with a 24" Asus LCD (which is, itself, a perfectly reasonable display for the price) and immediately shoved the Asus off to be the secondary monitor after seeing just how pretty this new display is. The included stand tilts, goes up and down with perfect balance, and allows the display to rotate into portrait mode. Allows use of NEC's Naviset software, which lets you configure the monitor's settings from within Windows.

Cons: Expensive. Heavier than most common LCD monitors -- if you're shopping for a different stand to put this one on, make sure it'll support it. Naviset software does not run on Vista x64 at this time; NEC says they're working on it.

Overall Review: Read the manual! There's a lot of stuff which can be tweaked to preference, and a lot of stuff that is turned off by default that folks might find useful. Overdrive, the NEC system which makes pixel response time faster, is one of them (and it does make it a lot faster). Colorcomp, which is an NEC system that evens out the (extremely minimal) color variation across the screen is another. And since this type of panel is can suffer temporary image retention, there's other features which can automatically move the image around on the screen on at user-set intervals. This would be very useful if the monitor were usually showing the same thing for many hours or days at a time.

Pros: Very vivid, extremely bright - and with a 1600x1200 resolution crammed into 20 inches of screen, the resolution is fantastic. It's very easy to set up, has a very good stand, and - while it's a small thing - the directional 'nub' used for menu navigation is the first intuitive monitor control I have ever used. Overall, it's a fantastic monitor.

Cons: I can think of none, really. Occasionally I think I might see some color variation when you change viewing angles, but this is common to most large monitors - and if I'm questioning whether it's actually real, it seems slight enough to be irrelevant.

Overall Review: I bought this monitor because I wanted a big screen, in 4:3 for gaming, without getting stuck with a 1280x1024 or an oversized 1600x1200. I have not been disappointed in the least, and I consider this monitor a fantastic buy.
