Question 1

Does this product have the capability of taking, say, a MKV and creating a playable DVD or Blu-Ray?  I kind of doubt it, but worth asking.

Thanks.  It's the actual authoring of such files that I need to do, tried various free ware programs to no avail.  Usually use handbrake to encode, not sure how this compares to that for speed, but it's free!  Unfortunately once I have the encoded file, putting it back to a playable DVD hasn't worked for me.

Question 2

Does recode actually play the converted video file so I could watch the movie as well?

It only converts the file but Windows Media Player can play most files and VLC plays just about everything.  Seatch for Video Lan and you will find it.  It is a free program.

Question 3

On Nero's web site it says "Nero Recode makes it simple to rip and import videos in virtually any file or disc format, including Blu-ray Disc™, and convert them to just about any other formats", but the one NEWEGG review from Todd P. says "To the previous reviewer. This software is NOT for ripping DVD or Blu Ray discs."  I assume the distinction here is copy protected blue-rays?  So, it will rip a dvd or Blue Ray, just not one that is copy protected?  Is that correct?

I have used Nero Recode for a number of years. I have had no problems ripping "NON" protected DVDs and Blu-Rays. I have just upgraded to 2014 version. The program layout has changed (I'm still getting used to it so I currently don't think it is as easy to use as it once was) and the processing speed seems to have slowed dramatically. I think it is due to the fact that as operating systems and programs become more "bulky" with features and codes, they slow down and are no longer as streamlined as they were when they were younger.

Question 4

How will this handle DRM content on iTunes?  Will I be able to convert the digital file I legally purchased from iTunes to be able to play on an Android device?

i dont think it will be able to open the file.
i just rerecord the songs with audacity (open source software) and save them. there is some loss, but there always will be if you are doing this
