Does this unit work with windows 8.1?

Don't bother with this adapter or the other Netggear AC one. They are horrible however did work in windows 8.1 once drivers were updated but I could not connect at 5ghz on either of the devices.

As of a few months ago the only decent ac usb adapter was the ASUS (USB-AC56)  which uses a different chip set. Ensure you don't get one of these netgears one. Like I said I tried this one and the bigger one. They are useless.

Is this product compatible with WiFi in general, like in a wireless set-up at a hotel, or do you need a router as well as the adapter?

This adapter is fully compatible. I bought it as the built in in my laptop died. One nice thing is I have a newer AC compatible router so I get the 600-800 speeds at the 5G.

I want to provide wireless connectivity for an old desktop. Will this device allow me to do that? I'm used to installing an internal card.

Yes plug it in and install device drivers from cd then your good to go works great. Been using for a month picks up my router which is 35 feet away.

does this work with a mac powerbook g4 I have this adapter but I lost the instructions?

It will work, you will need a updated driver, but works in wife's very well. If the wireless router is also a AC router, 5G is running 850mbps. 3G 300, consistently.
