Question 1

a) Will this device work effectively if plugged into a surge protector, or UPS, rather than directly into an electrical outlet?
b) What is the effective working distance of the WiFi extender from the wireless router if the router is located on a second floor, and the WiFi extender is plugged into an outlet on the first floor?

Funny you should ask cause i had just tried a surge protector and even though it shouldnt make a difference it did. Plugging directly into wall outlet gave me the best result.

Floor to floor the extender will work but obviously the strength is not as good. From my use, same floor is full bars, every floor is reduced almost 50%. But you can still connect between 3 floors.

Just note that how this works, you will see both wifi connections appear on your phone or laptop, your wireless router and this. So you will have to select based off your location in your house.

Question 2

I am trying to boost my 5GHz (wifi) signal, and not my 2.5 GHz, because i want a clear music channel, but not to interfere with a nearby Bluetooth speaker set (outdoor/deck).  Can you select only one band (5GHz)?

When this device is on there are 2 additional SSIDs created to extend the network. If your original wifi is "mywifi" then the device will create "mywifi_2GEXT" and "mywifi_5GEXT". So you would be able to select the explicit 5GHz signal.

Question 3

Is this equipment easy to install for someone that is computer savvy?  Also will be reach 40 ft. beyond the house?

Yes this is relatively easy to install, Plug it in and configure as if it were a router (sorta)... same concept. The worst that could happen is you have no idea what's going on and return it. But i found it rather easy to install.

Will this work with a fios quantum router?

I believe it will work. It worked with my Time-warner-cable router.  It really extended the range for all my wifi devices.

I have a netgear R7000 router i do not believe it has a WPS button, will the neat gear 6100 still connect?

Yes it will connect, however, you will have to manuelly get into the built in web sever to setup the wifi extender. The cd that come with it, will help you achieve it. The difference with the WPS is that it does it for if you have the option.

I have noted that this equipment cannot be connected through a surge protector but I was wondering if there was a problem using an extension cord with the equipment or is it mandatory to plug directly into the wall socket?

I had noted someone previously commenting that running through a surge protector gave them issues. I felt since plugs are generally low I could raise the height with an extension cord.

Question 7

Do I just plug it into the wall outlet or do I have to run an ethernet cable from my existing router to it?  Also, what if I already have a router hooked up to my modem that is 5G as well, does it affect it?

You will have to plug it into the wall in whatever desired location so that you can extend the wifi, so no you will not have to plug it into an existing router. However you will have to configure it like one, so if you have experience in setting up wifi networks it should go rather easy. I personally have extended both my 5G and 2.4G bands in my home, they're also wireless AC as well, so most of my AC devices get to take full advantage of that since they're so far away from the main router (so you will not have to make any changes to your existing configuration as this is a standalone device). A cool thing that you can do is plug a device directly into the extender as if it were a router and gain internet access in the event you had a PC without a wireless card. Even if you don't have any 802.11ac I'd recommend purchasing this device since this will help future proof your home in the event you decide to upgrade your router to an ac one as well since they are backwards compatible. Hopefully this answer your question.

Could I use the ethernet port to connect a printer (i.e convert a wired printer to a wireless one)?

I have tested this device's Ethernet port connected directly to my son's X-Box, my Direct TV receiver, and currently I am using it as a wireless bridge to my shop. I have a 8 port mini switch connected to this extender with four devices connected to the mini-switch. Works great. I don 't see why it would not work for your printer. All my devices don't detect the difference.

Are you able to add a network switch to the Ethernet port on the extender?

Yes, I was previously using a 5 port netgear switch to give network access to a poweredge server that I had running till I had a hardline connection made. So yes you can attach a switch to this extender and provide Internet access and network access to non-wireless devices. I am not sure as to whether this will work with enterprise level network switches by my thoughts would say yes.

I am in a 2600 square foot house the router is in the basement( not a good Idea) the extender is on the second floor and does a great job for both the first and second floor. I would stay with a netgear devise.
