My Comcast router is in the basement and I have had to use wifi extenders to get a signal upstairs, but have had mixed results.  I do have an ethernet connection in my family room upstairs.  Can I feed the ethernet into this modem and then have it extend from there or does the incoming signal have to be wifi like the cheaper extenders?

Yes you can plug an Ethernet cable to the back and make it transmit a wifi signal (it becomes an access point). To me this is the best way to use it rather than as an extender. The draw back is that you will not be able to use the remaining Ethernet ports while in access point mode.

hey my router is at one end of my house and i need this to boost signal to the other end of my house.  can I wireless connect my current wifi internet wirelessly to this box and then have the signal boosted from there?

if you are asking about wireless connection (WPS) between your router and this extender then YES.  remember that it all depends on the router's WPS capability (2G or 5G).  there will be some interference with 2G connection when microwave is using near by.  you will lose your internet connection when this happens.

unless there is no way that wire connection is possible, wireless tends to lose speed.  I always try to connect the router and this device with CAT6 wire when possible.  CAT6 handles more bandwidth much better than CAT5 especially for watching video over the network.

can i connect this via an ethernet cable and then use it as a switch and wireless range extender?

If I understand your question yes it can. I have it installed in my office and connected via ethernet to my switch that all my other PCs are connected to. I have it connecedt to my router wirelessly via 5G. Now all my office PCs can connect (bridge) to the router via this extender/AP. It also has the 2.4G open for other devices to connect to wirelessly, if needed. Hope this helps and I love the setup!

It is my understanding that you need a router or a wireless subscription service (AT&T, for example) before this extender will work.

does this unit allow you to manually select the broadcast channels or does it just retransmit on the same channel as the original channel?

You are able to manually select and create  the name. I can see my old channels and the two new channels from the new unit.

Can i connect my R7000 router with this EX7000 Range Extender via CAT6 cable instead of Wireless to expand WiFi coverage of my home? If im not clear, both equipments will be out of wireless range so they will need to communicate via CAT cable. Is it possible?

Yes, definitely...  Most routers/range extender will be communicated either by wire/wireless connections however the prefer method would be wire (personally) and this is what i currently have unless you cannot have any means of running the wire between the 2 devices then wireless it must.  CAT6/CAT5 are all the same; however CAT6 can handle more bandwidth, speed & noise etc... much better than CAT5.  Regardless of which type of wire that you using, the maximum length for both types is 100 meters or 328 ft.

One of my laptops are running Windows 10, and all seems to be fine. Had no issues with the Range Extender working with Windows 10. Just make sure you upgrade the firmware.

Can this be used as a bridge?

I use this as a "media bridge", meaning that I connect it to my wifi router wirelessly, and then connect ethernet devices to it directly. There may be less expensive options for this functionality, but this device does it very well.

Does this help with DSL in a long one-story house?

This helped expand out coverage in a large 3 story house but probably with a smaller footprint that a large one-story house.   My guess is that it would be helpful.  The best way to do it would be to place the Extender on the opposite side of the house from where your modem/router currently resides but not so far away that the Extender can't get a strong enough signal from the router (assuming that you're using WiFi to communicate to the Extender). I have an old (probably 10 years) Netgear WiFi router connected by CAT6 cable to my Comcast gateway to extend my signal to the other end of the house. My current extender is substantially slower (6 vs 30mbs) than the WiFi from the Comcast gateway.
Would the EX7000 speed up my connection?
Can I use the same SSID as my Comcast router?

If it is wireless you want to extend then this is a good way to extend since it will push a lot faster than 30Mbps. There are better whole house solutions available now though through netgear, however if this does the trick great. I have two of these in my house and they are great using the fastlane technology. 1.3Gbps...if you have a device that can handle it. What's nice is you can plug into it and use it as an extension of your current WiFi Router. You can look up Orbi and see if that is applicable to you also made by Netgear but I don't think it has as many ports on the back.
