Can this be connected to the existing router using one of the gigabit ethernet ports?

Yes, You can set it up as an Access Point which allows you to create a hotspot in a location where you already have an ethernet drop.  Even though another reviewer stated he couldn't find the setting, all you have to do is do smart setup, select access point, and it's set to go (following the wizard.)

Is this the product mfg date 2018 or 2019? It looks like you have 2 of the same item listed one older and one newer.

Would it be bad to add another range extender to a range extender?

Not really, but hardwired between devices are recommended or you will lose speed and or interference otherwise.
