This has a Gigabit transfer rate which means 1000mbps.... in saying that this switch will be fine for all your needs.

As far as supporting it without a doubt, The older switches only use 10/100 mbps but this one is 10/100/1000. You'll have this for years to come.

No. Switches are not effected by different operating systems, and will work fine with Macs or Windows PC's.

Cable lengths when dealing with Ethernet are not device dependent. You should always use the standards for making these determinations.

1000BASE-T (also known as IEEE 802.3ab) is a standard for gigabit Ethernet over copper wiring. Each 1000BASE-T network segment can be a maximum length of 100 meters (328 feet), and must use Category 5 cable or better (including Cat 5e and Cat 6).

This also applies for 10Base-T (10mbit) and 100Base-T (100mbit) connections.

Basically, it is never recommended to have a copper network cable run more than 328 feet without a powered device, such as a repeater, hub or switch inline.

I cannot connect my smart tv to netfix.  Vizio repair man said it was my wifi modem with Comcast.  He hooked up a router and it worked fine.  is this the kind of router I need?

This is a network switch not a router but you can plug your TV into this and then connect this to your Comcast modem but you could also just run a long cable from your TV to your Comcast modem. The purpose of a switch is to give you more network ports.

Rick, yes you can. This is an unmanaged switch.  It will pick up the IP address assignments from your router.  I have four of these in my house servicing two TV rooms and 2 computer work areas.  They connect to a Netgear 24 port switch which is connected to a Netgear router.  They work great.  Don't forget to register it with Netgear for the lifetime warranty which they honor without hassle. As long as your HP has an Ethernet port on it somewhere (usually in the back) you can.  This is an excellent switch for splitting your internet between several pieces of equipment like a computer, a printer, VOIP phone, bluray player, etc.  Typically, you'll plug a cable from your DSL/Cable modem into plug #5 on the Netgear switch then run a cable from your computer into plugs 1,2, 3 or 4.  It's an unmanaged switch so there's no set up.  It should work as soon as you make the connections.

Yes, networking is OS agnostic. you just have to have a modern OS on a computer with an Ethernet port. you'll also need a router to assign IP addresses. This is only a switch that allows multiple devices/computers to share the same port on the router.
