(a) does this particular item come with the rack mount ears, so as to mount it in a rack?
(b) if so, does it only connect to a rack at the front, or both front & rear (therefore do we need two sets of ears?)

The rack-mounting brackets mount on the front side (held to the switch frame with four countersink screws).  The brackets are stout enough to support the cantilevered weight of the switch when installed into a standard rack.  Obviously, you want to avoid using it as a "support" for other rack-mounted units above it.

This is a layer 2 switch with some layer three features.  It is an excellent switch, particularly of you are a heavy VLAN user.  I would not recommend it in place of a real router.
