do I need router to make this work for Wi-Fi?

This product is both a modem (converts the signal from the cable company internet service provider) and a router (sends the signal to your computer and other devices). The router has both wired and wireless capability.

So, this is all you need to connect your cable from the cable TV company to setup your wireless network.

Don't buy this if you have DSL (from a phone company like ATT uverse). It worked fine for me with Comcast.

I initially gave Comcast the model number from the side of the router and they told me that it was not a supported device. I called back and told them it was the N450-100NAS and they said ok (see comments from others). Check your cable company's website for compatible cable modems.

I haven't had this very long but so far it works great!

Will this router work with Time Warner Cable?

The short answer is yes, but check their website for information about what telecom standard is available in your area. The DOCSIS 3.0 standard is typically used now, but perhaps not in all areas. This router is DOCSIS 3.0 compliant and in fact I use it with Time Warner cable, Queens, NY.

See the Time Warner site for router support. Go to Plans --> Internet --> Buy your modem, in their menu.

Will it work with Comcast internet?

As Comcast is pretty large company, and my father has a NetGear with Comcast Im going to go with 99% sure it will.  When you first hook it up, you will have to call them and have them recognize the device but after that it should be a piece of cake.

Question 4

I cannot see a co-axial cable connection on mine...only Ethernet ports are available. 
I have xfinity and they said it won't  work without the co-axial cable port.

Any ideas?

There should be one just above where the power cable plugs into the router. It looks the same as the cable that plugs into your cable box. If you don't see one, exchange it. There has to be a coaxial cable port for it to pick up a signal from Xfinity.

Is this compatible with time warner cable in the new york area?

It works fine in North Carolina and TWC supports this router, so I see no reason why it won't work in NY.  This is an excellent wireless router and have had no problems since installation.

will this product support a canon printer equipted with wifi?

Yes sir, this is a wireless N wireless router.
Your printer most likely runs on the same frequency as nearly all devices in the last few years use that. So the answer is yes your printer if it is wireless  will work.

Does this modem support VPN connections? My current N300 Netgear will not allow me to VPN to my work server. Thanks.

I too have log into a vpn  for and had no problems doing that with this item. It did take my company a little long to help set it up but the speed was worth it.

Wiill I be able to use as a lan for networking pc, printer, tablet, etc.  Also can I use to secure the wifi to allow others security while using?

Yes you can network all of your devices. I have 2 pcs, several tablets, a laptop, 2 printers,2 xboxes, a smart TV, and several phones all running on this baby. Not sure what you mean with the security portion of this question, however yes you have many security options with this modem/router.

Will this work with Comcast triple play? As the voice portion isn't needed. (cheaper to get triple play than double play)

I don't know why it would not. It only sends out what it receives.

Have Frontier Internet through phone lines. Will this work to replace their router?

No this modem will not work for you unless there is a converter that Im not aware of.  The only data in port on this modem is for cable, not phone lines.  It is an amazing modem if you do get cable internet, great connectivity, speed and wi-fi range.
